This step is required. You must select at least one performance type.
What Are Performance Types?
Performance types define how many dancers perform in an entry. They are one of the four dimensions that define a section.
Available Performance Types
The system provides standard types, and you can add custom ones:
| Type | Min Dancers | Max Dancers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | 1 | 1 | System type |
| Duo/Duet | 2 | 2 | System type |
| Trio | 3 | 3 | System type |
| Group | 4 or more | Configurable | Custom range |
| Battle | Varies | Varies | Uses knockout elimination voting |
| Battle - Placement | Varies | Varies | Uses judge-ranked placement voting (1st–10th) |
System types are pre-defined and cannot be deleted. They are marked with a "System" badge.
Battle types are marked with a special icon and use a different judging format instead of numerical scoring. There are two battle formats:
Battle (Knockout)
Knockout battles use an elimination voting system. Dancers compete head-to-head or in groups, and judges vote for who advances to the next round. Dancers who don't receive enough votes are eliminated.
- Early rounds eliminate multiple dancers at once (e.g., half the field)
- Top 4 rule: when 4 or fewer dancers remain, the system eliminates one dancer per round to guarantee unique placements (no ties for 1st through 4th)
- Placements are determined by elimination order: the last dancer standing wins 1st place
- Judges see a grid of dancer numbers and tap to vote for who should advance
- Requires a Battle Score Card to be configured in the Score Cards step
Best suited for: freestyle battles, cyphers, and head-to-head face-offs where dancers perform in real time and judges decide on the spot.
Battle - Placement
Placement battles use a ranked voting system. Instead of elimination rounds, judges independently assign placement positions (1st through 10th) to each participant.
- Each judge assigns positions independently. Judges do not see each other's rankings
- All positions must be filled before a judge can submit
- After all judges submit, the system averages each participant's placement across all judges
- The averaged placements are converted to points using the placement scorecard (e.g., 1st = 10 pts, 2nd = 9 pts, etc.)
- Ties are broken by the lowest individual placement received from any judge
- Requires a Placement Score Card to be configured in the Score Cards step
Best suited for: battles where all participants perform first and judges rank them afterwards, or any format where you want averaged rankings rather than live elimination.
Key Differences
| Feature | Battle (Knockout) | Battle - Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Judging style | Live voting each round | Rank all participants at once |
| Rounds | Multiple elimination rounds | Single round of ranking |
| How winners are decided | Last dancer standing | Lowest average placement |
| Ties possible? | No (top 4 guaranteed unique) | Rare (tiebreaker rules apply) |
| Score card needed | Battle Score Card | Placement Score Card |
Both battle types do not have a fixed performance duration. See the "Battle Voting for Judges" and "Placement Voting for Judges" articles for details on how judges interact with each format.
Creating Custom Performance Types
Click "Add New Performance Type" to create one:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The type name (e.g., "Large Group", "Production") |
| Min Dancers | Minimum number of dancers per entry |
| Max Dancers | Maximum number of dancers per entry |
Min dancers must be less than or equal to max dancers. You cannot create a type with the same name as a system type.
Example Types
Click "Add Example Types" to see additional suggestions beyond the system defaults.
Important Notes
- At least 1 performance type is required to proceed
- Removing a type permanently deletes all sections, entries, scores, and related data that use it
- Performance types determine which score card format is used (regular or battle)
